What is Sleep Apnea?

Dr. K. Pat Brown can help diagnose and treat your sleep apnea.

What is sleep Apnea? It is a condition where you will actually stop breathing during your night of sleep. studies show that during your sleep you will have pauses of normal breathing which can last up to 30 seconds if not longer. Sleep Apnea can be broken down into 3 groups. Obstructive, Complex and Central. Each of the types is an abnormal period of breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the airway is blocking the airway and the natural flow of air. Central sleep apnea is when the brain is not sending the proper signals and the muscles that control your breathing is not working properly. Complex sleep apnea is when obstructive and central sleep apnea is combined. In order to receive the proper treatment is necessary to help diagnose what kind of sleep apnea you suffer from.

Sleep Apnea Testing

A sleep study (also called a polysomnogram) is the only definitive way to tell whether or not you suffer from sleep apnea, and how severe that apnea might be. Sleep studies can be conducted in a sleep laboratory or at home using an ambulatory sleep study device, such as the Metabyte HST by Braebon. This test is a two night sleep study that is painless and simple to administer. The results are analyzed by a physician who will then give a definitive diagnosis. Once you’ve received a diagnosis, Dr. Brown can help you to find the treatment that is right for you
